Why Tree Farms are “Green”

Farmed wood is an example of socially responsible forestry. Another way we can minimize our impact on the environment while still taking advantage of useful and essential natural materials such as hardwood lumber include utilizing found wood that’s been recycled, for example, from abandoned buildings. We can also make sure no natural resource goes to waste by uprooting the stumps of wild trees.

But recycled and found wood is in limited supply.  To meet our society’s demand for lumber, we need to cut down forests’ worth of fully-grown trees.

Tree farms give us an eco-friendly way to meet our supply needs because they save natural forests from being razed and left that way. When traditional foresters cut down wild forests, rarely do they take the time, effort, or the financial burden upon themselves to repopulate the area with new plants.

At a tree farm, on the other hand, lumber that has been harvested is replanted so that, eventually, the replanted section of land will be harvested, too, and the cycle will repeat.  This preserves wild forests, leaving them undisrupted for animal and other plant species.

Tree farms turn forests into a renewable natural resource, instead of a limited one that cannot sustain our demand for lumber at the current rate of consumption. They produce trees at a high-yield, short-turnaround rate for maximum efficiency — a process that also positively impacts our collective carbon footprint!

Making Hand-Carved Furniture

The Monkey Pod tree goes by different names — Acacia, Rain Tree — but villagers in Chiang Mai, Thailand might call it a staple of the community. Wood carving is a skill passed down from generation to generation in this region, located near northern Thailand’s largest metropolis.  But carving is not a full-time job — between family members and close friends in this agricultural society, gathering together to carve furniture is a way to pass the time between rice harvests.

Artisans use large branches from the Monkey Pod tree in their creations, so the tree itself is spared and left to regenerate itself. This particular species is known for its quick growth — branches might add 1-2 inches in diameter per year.  Branches 1-2 meters long are cut and delivered to a facility for carving, pictured below.
First, the wood is “rough cut” into the approximate size of the final product with a chainsaw. This step is done while the wood is still “wet” — a term used for freshly cut material, since Monkey Pod has an unusually high moisture content at over 50%. Any scraps left over from this first stage is used by workers for smaller carvings or to heat homes in the cool season.  Rough cutting takes time and skill, since not only do workers need to ensure that each piece is identical as possible, but also that their chainsaw blades do not become stuck inside the wood.  The 18″ cube stool requires particular expertise because of its hollowed-out center.
Each carver typically owns his or her own tool set, which are also made by hand. After smoothing out the surface of each piece, they are placed in a natural “solar oven,” a room that allows sunlight to bring moisture content down to under 10%. Toward the end of this drying stage, workers raise the temperature in the room to eliminate wood bug eggs. Next the furniture is finely sanded — any cracks are inspected and smoothed — and a protective coat of natural oil is applied in 3-6 layers over the course of a week. Slight variations may occur between each finished product since the wood naturally shrinks and shifts as it dries — but that only means that any piece you order will be unique to you!

All About Natural Wood Finishes

If you love the look of natural wooden furniture and support its sustainable mission, you’ll want to see it maintain its healthy glow over the years.  Your furniture comes delivered already in a coat of natural oil — but what is a natural oil?  And how can you use it to preserve the unique qualities of your new decor?

While other types of wooden furniture may be coated in synthetic varnishes to preserve the wood and prevent it from greying or becoming dull over time, our products are sealed in teak or tung oil.  The difference is that synthetic finishes are liable to chip and wear down, exposing the household and its occupants to potentially hazardous materials, since hazardous materials go into the making of these sealants.  Natural sealants also wear down over time, but, since they are plant-based, exposure to teak or tung oil does not pose a threat to anyone’s health.

Tung oil is derived from nut of the tung tree, pictured right, which is native to southern China, but now is grown elsewhere as well.  It dries to give wood a honey-colored tint with a wetted, glowing look when applied slowly in thin coats.  To touch up furniture with tung oil, simply apply with a thin cloth — being careful not to saturate the wood — allow to dry, and reapply.  Tung is a “drying oil,” meaning that it hardens as it’s exposed to air, so it’s important to allow your furniture to fully soak up the oil before putting it back in its place.

Teak oil, on the other hand, isn’t made from the teak tree.  It’s a combination of natural linseed, rosewood, or tung oils — named as such just because it’s so commonly used on teak wood.  The application process is similar to tung oil.  It can be applied over the surface with a brush or thin rag, and any excess oil can simply be dabbed off with a clean section of cloth.  Oiling teak wood won’t increase its durability — teak is notoriously durable — but it will help promote a golden glow, pictured below right.

Teak oil differs slightly from tung oil because it won’t form a layer on top of the wood, instead soaking into the grain to protect it from becoming dull.  It’s a good choice for both teak wood and eucalyptus, while tung oil can be used on monkey pod and mango woods.  Both options are simple ways to keep your eco-friendly furniture looking as lovely as the day it arrived on your doorstep!

Decorating with Wood Stools

Adding a new, sustainable wooden stool to your home is an easy way to incorporate warm, natural tones into your décor.  Use them as seating for kids or adults, as side tables for a living room sofa, or as a place to show off a special work of art or unique artifact.   All of our stools are made out of durable woods that would look great either indoors or out — but if you’re going to put them outdoors, we recommend taking one precautionary step.  Rubbing teak or tung oil into the stool will help maintain a healthy luster and prevent cracking, and it’s a natural way to make the wood more water-resistant.

Twist stools give any space a special organic flair with their signature graceful lines and rich hues.  Use them to spruce up a foyer, or to add drama to a living room or study as either storage or seating.

Many of our pieces are available in a variety of shades, as well.  A light, whitewashed vine stool, for example, can help open up smaller spaces and give them an airy feel while adding valuable surface area or seating.  They’re also go well with cool color schemes, such as light blues or greys.

Darker colored stools, such as the Squeezed Rectangle style in walnut, look best in spaces dominated by warm tones.  They can add a nice modern touch to just about any space from dining room to den.

What Makes Wood Sustainable?

What makes wooden furniture ‘sustainable’?  Wood might seem like an inherently eco-friendly material — as long as it’s solid and not particleboard or plywood, which can contain toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde.

But while wood is a natural product and requires less carbon emissions than plastics and other man-made materials, remember that not all lumber suppliers also re-plant the forests they harvest, but “clear cut” them, meaning simply that the forest is left destroyed.  So the trees that once harbored and helped sustain other wildlife leave a void in the local ecosystem.

“Sustainable” wood comes from trees that live (or, lived) in a sustainable forest — one where the trees cut down to produce lumber are replenished to minimize a negative environmental impact.  Most trees raised this way are fast-growing, too — some reaching full height in four to five years.  Teak, bamboo, and monkey pod, for example, are all durable woods that can be grown in an environmentally-friendly way.  Durability is an important factor where furniture is concerned, of course, since a long-lasting wood helps reduce waste!  Eco-conscious consumers should beware of oak, redwood, and beech woods.  Since these specimens can take over 30 years to mature, they are not generally harvested in an eco-friendly manner.

An organization called the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) provides third-party certification to foresters based on a set of rules — the most stringent in the business — regarding the way their wood is harvested.  Among other things, FSC-certified foresters must respect the rights of workers and indigenous peoples on the land, minimize the environmental impact of their logging efforts, and promote the restoration of natural forests.  Another group, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), offers another, yet less-strict, certification system.

Furniture made from sustainable wood differs from other pieces in that it is commonly finished with natural oils, which are safer for home use than other, synthetic coatings.  Sustainable furniture is better for humans, and better for the environment!

Sustainable Wood- What is your Furniture made from?

There are different types of wood used to make sustainable furniture. Trees such as Monkey Pod, Teak, and Mango meet the criteria in order to be considered a sustainable material. These trees must have a fast regrowth rate, or be farmed, and replanted. Each type of wood produces high quality, long lasting furniture.

Teak wood is now being cut down in limited quantities in Thailand, since it is one of the most valuable exports. There are also two plantations where this tree is harvested.  And  efforts are being put forth to plant numerous new trees. You can buy furniture such as a spa stool, shelf and many other products are made from this type of wood.

Monkey Pod is most commonly regognized by it’s umbrella like shape. it grows in Fiji and Vanuatu, but it is not being utilized there. However in Thailand it is a favorable wood source. This tree is actually perfect for carving becuase of its large size. But it has to be cut down just as the order comes in, because the wood will dry out and could break if not used right away.

Many of us like mangoes but not everyone knows that the mango tree is a sustainable wood and is abundant in South East Asia. This wood is easy to carve and oil. It has became very popular for producing handicrafts.  Products such as wall panels. vases and others are made from Mango trees.

Furniture made from these types of wood is not only good quality, long lasting and unique but also safe for the environment. So next time you go out to buy a new piece of furniture make sure to look at what kind of wood it is made from.

How is Sustainable Wood Furniture Made

What does the term sustainable furniture mean? It means that the furniture is made from materials that do not harm the environment. The trees that are used grow fast and are highly abundant. This prevents the cutting down of entire forests and enables them to regrow within a couple of years.  Cutting trees that grow slow have many negative effects on the planet, especially in the long run.

Once the wood is cut and carved, it is coated with natural oils. Most of the non-green furniture is sprayed with toxic oils that can have potentially harmful side effects to your health, and also to the environment. They evaporate into the air causing the ozone layer to weaken. Sustainable furniture is covered with oils that are safe for you and your home and the environment.

The furniture is also durable. Many people may not consider this a factor  in making the furniture sustainable, but it plays an important role. Since the wood pieces last a long time, it does not contribute to the endless landfills.

Materials used to make sustainable wood furniture are all eco friendly, from the wood to the non toxic finished paint and oils. So by buying green furniture you are saving your health as much as you are saving the planet.

Why Sustainable Wood Furniture is Healthier for the Environment

Buying sustainable furniture is not only good for your health but also helps save the planet. You may ask yourself how exactly does buying sustainable furniture help the environment?

First of all, sustainable furniture is made from trees that grow fast, for example bamboo.  Even if bamboo trees get cut down in large quantities within a couple of years they will grow back. Some other woods that are sustainable are mango, acacia, and maple.

The sustainable wood is transported in a way that is not harmful to the planet. Some wood might be carried through the rainforest by elephants that are well treated and cared for. Since the wood is not transported by cars  it eliminates carbon dioxide gases. Other  companies might use wood that is locally grown in order to reduce the transport distance.

The furniture is then finished with natural oils and not toxic paint. This way the air is cleaner from dangerous chemicals. The chemicals used in paint add to air pollution and  can deteriorate the ozone layer.

By buying sustainable furniture you are helping save our environement and you are getting a good product for your home.

Why is Sustainable Wood Furniture Healthier for your Home?

What exactly is sustainable furniture? Its furniture made with materials that can be recycled and reused. It is produced in a way that has no harm on the environment and your health. The furniture is covered with non-toxic oils which prevent health problems for children as well as adults. Non sustainable furniture emits chemicals into the air, that cause indoor air pollution.  Toxic oils can also cause allergies, respiratory illnesses and sometimes may even lead to cancer in extremely serious cases.  These toxins are extremely  harmful  to the environment during production and after disposal.

Sustainable furniture helps keep our planet clean from different pollutants through reforestation. It is made with trees that grow faster than most other trees.  Non sustainable furniture is made by cutting down old forests that are extremely difficult to regrow since the trees could grow hundreds of years.  This contributes to global warming.  Sustainable furniture is made and disposed in a way that is beneficial to our earth.

A more practical benefit that everyone can agree on is that sustainable wood furniture will save you money in the long run. Although it might cost you a little more, it will no doubt last much longer. Sustainable wood furniture is more durable and is well suited for robust families and little children. But it also adds a unique and interesting factor to any room.
